Background of the Study
Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) play a significant role in maternal and child healthcare, especially in rural and underserved communities. They are trusted figures in many societies, providing antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. Given their influence within communities, TBAs have the potential to contribute to family planning education, helping to bridge the gap between formal healthcare services and local populations (Adebisi et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, where maternal mortality remains high, effective family planning education is essential for reducing unintended pregnancies and improving maternal health outcomes. However, despite government and NGO efforts, contraceptive prevalence remains low in many parts of the country, including Jigawa State. Many women continue to rely on TBAs for reproductive health services due to cultural beliefs, limited access to healthcare facilities, and mistrust of modern medical services (Yusuf et al., 2024).
This study seeks to appraise the role of TBAs in family planning education in Jigawa State. It will examine their level of knowledge, acceptance, and effectiveness in educating women about contraceptive methods and reproductive health.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve family planning education, contraceptive uptake remains low in Jigawa State. Many women prefer TBAs over formal healthcare providers due to accessibility, affordability, and cultural considerations. However, TBAs may lack adequate knowledge of modern contraception or hold biases against certain family planning methods, which could influence the information they provide (Okafor & Hassan, 2024). Additionally, there is limited research on how TBAs contribute to family planning education and whether their involvement enhances or hinders contraceptive uptake.
This study aims to assess whether TBAs serve as facilitators or barriers to effective family planning education in Jigawa State. By evaluating their knowledge, attitudes, and role in contraceptive counseling, this research will provide insights into how TBAs can be integrated into family planning programs to enhance reproductive health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the knowledge and perceptions of TBAs regarding family planning.
To assess the effectiveness of TBAs in educating women about contraception.
To explore challenges TBAs face in delivering family planning education.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge and perception of TBAs regarding family planning?
How effective are TBAs in educating women about contraception?
What challenges do TBAs face in delivering family planning education?
Research Hypotheses
TBAs with higher knowledge of family planning provide more accurate education to women.
Cultural beliefs significantly influence TBAs’ willingness to promote contraception.
The integration of TBAs into family planning programs improves contraceptive uptake.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on TBAs operating in Jigawa State, assessing their role in family planning education. Limitations may include reluctance among TBAs to disclose personal beliefs and practices, as well as potential biases in self-reported data.
